There are many benefits to reciting the Hanuman Chalisa. In fact, the truth is that there is nothing that cannot be obtained by reading the Hanuman Chalisa. The reason is that Lord Hanuman is capable of giving everything. He is the complete Supreme Being (Parabrahman/Paramātma) because Hanuman is the combined form of Shiva and Shakti. In reciting the Hanuman Chalisa we ask him for many things, which he grants based on our faith, devotion, any mistakes in our recitation, our capacity, and other such factors.

Increase in physical strength
Tulsidas describes how mighty Hanuman is in the Hanuman Chalisa when he writes, “Āpana teja samhāro āpai, tīnoṁ loka hāṅka teṁ kāṁpai.” This means: “You alone restrain your own power; the three worlds tremble at your roar.” In other words, only you can control your strength, because you possess such force that a single shout1 of yours makes the three worlds2 quake.
He is supremely powerful, and therefore we ask him for strength, which he readily grants. We do not ask him for strength alone — we also seek from him knowledge and wisdom.
Wisdom and knowledge are obtained
Hanuman is foremost among the wise. He is acquainted with all branches of learning. In the Hanuman Chalisa we ask him for knowledge and intelligence, which he gladly bestows upon us. We say to him, “Bala buddhi vidyā dehu mohiṁ,” which means: “O Lord, grant me strength, intelligence, and learning.”
Therefore, reciting the Hanuman Chalisa brings physical strength, sadbuddhi (the ability to discern right from wrong), and the attainment of vidya (knowledge).
Protection from ghosts, spirits, and demonic forces
Hanuman protects us from negative energies (bhuts, pishachs, etc.). Whoever recites the Hanuman Chalisa and lives a life of purity will not be approached by demonic forces. The Hanuman Chalisa says, “Bhūta piśāca nikaṭa nahiṁ āvai, Mahāvīra jaba nāma sunāvai,” which means: “Ghosts and evil spirits do not come near when the great hero’s name is chanted.” In other words, loudly invoking the name “Mahavir Hanuman” drives away negative energies.
End of all illnesses
Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa brings about the end of illnesses by itself. If you are suffering from a serious disease, you should recite the Hanuman Bahuk while strictly following all the prescribed rules and procedures. At the same time you should continuously chant the name “Veer Hanuman.” This is because the Chalisa says, “Nāsai roga harai saba pīrā, japata nirantara Hanumata bīrā,” which means: “All diseases are destroyed and all pains removed for the one who constantly chants ‘Hanumat Beera’ (Veer Hanuman).”
Note: This does not mean you should forgo necessary medical treatment. It may be that your prārabdha (the portion of past karma already unfolding) has already taken effect and you are only now beginning spiritual practice. Therefore continue to seek appropriate medical care as needed.
Freedom from fear
Lord Hanuman is “Mahaveer,” and therefore he grants fearlessness. Devotees who take refuge in Hanuman become fearless, because their strength is Lord Hanuman himself. Those who recite the Hanuman Chalisa daily receive all comforts and become brave, since Hanuman personally protects them. The Chalisa says, “Sab sukha lahai tumhārī śaraṇā, tuma rakṣaka kāhū ko ḍaranā,” which means: “All happiness is found in your shelter, because when you are the protector, who then has any reason to be afraid.”
Protection from all kinds of crises
Hanuman is the Sankatmochan (the remover of troubles) because he himself rescued Shri Rama from dangers3, and thus became Sankatmochan. Hanuman personally protects those who recite the Hanuman Chalisa from hardships. The Chalisa says, “Saṅkaṭa teṁ Hanumān chuḍāvai, mana krama bacana dhyāna jo lāvai,” which means: “Hanuman frees from danger the one who constantly brings him to mind in thought, deed, and word.”
Eight siddhis and nine nidhis
The one who recites the Hanuman Chalisa receives the eight siddhis (spiritual attainments) and the nine nidhis (treasures), but for that many strict practices must be performed. The Chalisa says, “Aṣṭa siddhi nau nidhi ke dātā, asa vara dīna Jānakī Mātā.” It means: “You are the giver of the eight siddhis and nine nidhis; this boon was granted to you by Mother Janaki (Sita).”
It also says, “Jo yaha paḍhai Hanumān Cālīsā, hoya siddhi sākṣī Gaurīsā.” Means: “Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa will attain siddhi, and Lord Shankara (Gaurisa) is the witness to this.”
Devotion to Lord Rama’s feet
Tulsidas wrote, “Rāma rasāyana tumhare pāsā,” meaning: “The sweet nectar of devotion to Rama is with you.” The essence of Rama-bhakti multiplies when shared, so Hanuman looks for those who are deserving of it.
The Chalisa also says, “Tumhare bhajana Rāma ko pāvai, janma-janma ke duḥkha bisarāvai.” It means: “By singing your praises (or through your devotion) one attains Lord Rama, the sorrows of many births are forgotten.” In other words, by devotion to Hanuman one gains the vision of Rama and thereby loses the suffering of countless lifetimes and attains liberation.
Liberation from bonds
Hanuman frees captives from bondage because he is the Bandimocan (liberator of prisoners). According to the Hanuman Chalisa: “Jo śata bāra pāṭha kara koī, chūṭahi bandi mahā sukha hoī.” This means: “Whoever recites the Hanuman Chalisa one hundred times is released from bondage and attains great happiness.” However, there is a prescribed method for reciting the Hanuman Chalisa one hundred times.
Abode in Lord Rama’s divine realm
Devotees of Hanuman ultimately attain liberation (moksha). As stated in the Hanuman Chalisa “Antakāla Raghubara pura jāī, jahāṁ janma Hari-bhakta kahāī.” This means: Those who recite the Hanuman Chalisa, or who are devoted to you, go to the abode of Lord Rama after death. And even if they are born again, they are known as devotees of Rama.
