Why didn’t Angada go to Lanka to find Sita Mata in Hanuman’s place? Angada was the son of Bali, and he could have gone, but he had doubts about returning. Learn the reason for that doubt.
Why didn’t Angada go to Lanka to find Sita Mata?
Jambavan, along with Hanuman, Angada, Nala, Nila, and the other Vanaras, reached the southern shore. There, they met Sampati. Sampati informed them that Sita was in Lanka, which lay at a distance of 100 yojanas (approximately 1,200 kilometres).
Now a problem arose that who would cross such a vast ocean to go there? Jambavan had grown old. But, in his youth, he had completed seven circumambulations in just two ghadis (48 minutes) around Vamana, the cosmic dwarf incarnation. This was the same Vamana who measured the Earth along with the seven lower worlds in one step, and the seven upper worlds in the second and leaving no space for a third step to be placed.
Jambavan began asking everyone who would go to Lanka. And not only that, but who would also find Sita, reassure her, and return safely. Going to Ravana’s Lanka, which was more beautiful and secure than Indra’s Amaravati or Kubera’s Alakapuri, and returning was next to impossible.
All the Vanaras described their strength, yet everyone remained doubtful. Angada said, I can go, but even I have doubts about returning. The reason for this doubt was Akshayakumara.
Angada explained, Akshayakumara and I studied together in the gurukul of Deva Guru Brihaspati in Devaloka. Whenever I disliked something Akshayakumara said, I would beat him. Once, he complained about me to Guru Brihaspati.
Guru Brihaspati advised me not to do such a thing again. But I did not obey his words, and the next time as well, I beat Akshayakumara. He once again complained to Gurudeva. This time, Guru Brihaspati became angry and cursed me, saying, “If ever you fight with Akshayakumara again, you will meet your death.”
I will go to Lanka, but if I end up fighting Akshayakumara, my death is certain. That is why I doubt my ability to return from Lanka. Jambavan also did not send Angada to Lanka because he was the crown prince. It was not appropriate in any way for a crown prince to go as a messenger.
